elisabethin early 2004 i told my family and friends that i had just bought nearly a ton of cast iron printing equipment and was leaving new york for boston. i had a degree in international politics and economics from middlebury college, no real business experience, and no formal training in letterpress or design. more than four years later i'm still at it, having taught myself the mechanics of my old presses and having found that i simply design until my eyes are happy with what they see. now i love and obsess about letterpress, and feel so lucky to have fallen into such a simple, happy way of making things. here's why i think letterpress is so special: in a world of mass-produced stuff, taking the time to find unique, well-crafted things that you know were made by somebody's hands, and make them your own, is something to delight in. if you love letterpress you probably feel the same way and will walk a few blocks out of your way to get the good stuff. or maybe not, but i do. you should too! |
